Southwest Airlines Extends Flight Schedule Through Early March

13, 2014. The new route is the next step in the integration process between Southwest Airlines and its wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is AirTran's top airport in terms of daily departures, and Reagan National ranks eighth. In addition to the once-daily Southwest charter jet service rates flight between Atlanta and Washington, D.C., AirTran will continue to operate five daily nonstop flights between the cities.

This weeks Middle Seat takes a hard look at the current state of airline schedule padding. (Click here to go to the column .) I look periodically at block time issues because schedules matter to travelers. (Heres a previous 2010 article about aggressive schedule-padding by airlines.) In addition to talking to operations executives at several airlines, I looked at individual airlines block time the how long it takes to get from gate to gate plusBureau of Transportation Statistics data on the average actual trip time. Overall, block time was down an average of one minute per flight at the nine biggest airlines. One minute on your flight doesnt sound significant, but across tens of thousands of flights per day it adds up to serious time.
